The World Hockey Association was a major men's professional ice hockey league in the United States of America and Canada. The league was founded in 1972-73 with 12 teams. The league, then with six full-time teams, merged into the National Hockey League in 1979-80, bringing four of its teams into the older league while the other two folded major league operations.
