National Hockey League

The National Hockey League is a major professional men's ice hockey league in the United States of America and Canada. The league was founded in 1917-18 with four teams (five franchises) in Canada, a dominion of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The league expanded to the United States of America in 1924-25. Canada's sovereign was renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland the day prior to the ending of 1926-27. Canada became fully independent during the 1981-82 postseason. The league has since expanded to include 32 teams in the United States of America and Canada (and has also played games in the Bundesrepublik Deutschland or Federal Republic of Germany, the Česká republika or Czech Republic, the Konungariket Sverige or Kingdom of Sweden, the Nippon-koku or "State of" Japan, the Suomen tasavalta or Republic of Finland, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).

All-Star Game

The National Hockey League All-Star Game is the league's all-star game. The league originally hosted all-star games as part of tributes to specific players or situations intermittently. The Ace Bailey Benefit Game was played in 1933-34, the Howie Morenz Memorial Game in 1937-38, and the Babe Siebert Memorial Game in 1939-40. The game has been held mostly regularly since 1947-48. In 1978-79, the league instead hosted a Challenge Cup series against the Soviet Union national ice hockey team. In 1986-87 the league instead hosted a Rendez-vous '87 series against the Soviet Union national ice hockey team. In 1995 the game was cancelled due to a lockout. In 2004-05 the entire season including the game was cancelled due to a lockout. In 2005-06 the game was cancelled due to the Winter Olympics. In 2009-10 the game was not scheduled due to the Winter Olympics. In 2013 the game was cancelled due to a lockout. In 2013-14 the game was not scheduled due to the Winter Olympics. In 2021 the game was cancelled due to the league's COVID-19 response. In 2024-25 the league instead plans to host a NHL 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
